Encyclopedia of Soils in the Environment

Im August 2023 ist die zweite, komplett überarbeitete und ergänzte Auflage der Encyclopedia of Soils in the Environment unter der Mitarbeit von Prof. Dr. Rupert Bäumler (wissenschaftliche Beratung, verantwortlicher Mitherausgeber von Band 4, Autor und Co-Autor) erschienen.

Die 5-bändige Reihe wurde von einem internationalen Team von Expertinnen und Experten verfasst und repräsentiert auf 3380 Seiten den Stand des globalen bodenkundlichen Wissens im 21. Jahrhundert an der Schnittstelle von Böden, Umwelt und Praxis in gesellschaftlichem Kontext – umfassend, aktuell, interdisziplinär – ein Nachschlagewerk für Studierende, Fachleute, politische Entscheidungsträgerinnen und Entscheidungsträger, und für Alle, denen bewusst ist, dass Böden als eine unserer wichtigsten Lebensgrundlagen unser Überleben sichern, und im ökosystemaren Gefüge mit großem Abstand die höchste Artenvielfalt und Individuendichte aufweisen.

Exkursionen und Große Geländeseminare

FGG-Exkursion „Island“ Sommer 2007

Anfang August machte sich eine unerschrockene, potenziell wetterfeste Gruppe reiselustiger FGGler, ausgerüstet mit allem, was das Überleben unter widrigsten Bedingungen sichert, auf in nordische Gefilde, um Island, das geographische Freiluft-Lehrbuch der Superlative zu erkunden. Nach einem Rundgang in der kleinsten Hauptstadt Europas und einer ersten Konfrontation mit den kulinarischen Highlights für Preisbewusste, führte die Rundreise zunächst in den Süden der Insel: Geysire, extra für uns durch unterirdische Rohrleitungen gespeist, Minieisberge kalbender Gletscher, Kolonien von Papageientauchern an steilen Klippen, vulkanische Spalten in bizarrer Mondlandschaft, die so gar nicht an Spalten erinnern, und allgegenwärtig das Zackenmützenmoos. Die regenreichste Ecke Islands überraschte mit einem Staubsturm. Quer durch die Insel ging es mit dem Allradbus auf einer Schotterpiste mit zahllosen Furten über die Sprengisandur, Europas größter Sand- und Lavawüste, zum Mückensee, dem Zentrum vulkanischer und postvulkanischer Aktivitäten zwischen Europa und Nordamerika, uns an heißen Quellen zu wärmen. Die Rundreise endete wie sie begann: mit einem kulinarischen Höhepunkt auf der wunderschönen Halbinsel Saefellsnes. Auf dem Haifischhof Bjarnarhöfn wird mit bodenkundlicher Hilfe der ungenießbare Eishai in eine geruchs- wie geschmacksintensive Köstlichkeit verwandelt, deren Genuss unter großzügiger Mithilfe eines Lösemittels von allen überlebt wurde. Allein ein Exkursionsziel konnte nicht erreicht werden: das Islandtief hat uns 14 Tage bitter enttäuscht, was von der expeditionstauglichen Reisegruppe mit einem hohen Lichtschutz- und Spaßfaktor kompensiert wurde. USA Sommer 2007 – „Vereinte Staaten – getrennte Welten“

Die „Große Exkursion USA“ führte 18 Studenten und zwei Professoren des Instituts für Geographie der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg vom mittleren Westen in die Rocky Mountains. In den drei Wochen vom 3. bis 24. September 2007 hatten wir die Möglichkeit, dieses kontroverse Land einmal genauer kennen zu lernen. Wir legten mehrere tausend Meilen zurück und untersuchten dieses einzigartige Land unter diversen kulturgeographischen und physisch-geographischen Gesichtspunkten. Vom Hotel oder Motel mit Jacuzzi und Klimaanlage – wie etwa in Chicago – in ein kleines Zelt mit nicht viel mehr als einem Schlafsack und der wärmenden Wirkung diverser Getränke. Selbst der phasenweise sehr abrupte Wechsel der Qualität unseres Schlafplatzes konnte der Wissensgier und der fast immer guten Laune keinen Abbruch tun. Zwischen über 30°C in Chicago und unter 0ºC im berühmten Yellowstone National Park – unsere Körper mussten die komplette Temperaturamplitude „durchleben“. Das Motto des vorhergehenden Hauptseminars – „Vereinigte Staaten – getrennte Welten“ – stand für uns auf dem Prüfstand, als wir uns aufmachten, den mittleren Westen der USA zu entdecken. Eingeschlossen von zwei großen Städten, Chicago und Denver, führte uns die Exkursionsroute zum größten Teil durch Gebiete, in welchen die extreme landschaftliche Diversität des Landes deutlich wurde. Wir durchquerten neun Bundesstaaten, besuchten fünf Nationalparks und passierten viele typische amerikanische Kleinstädte. Darüber hinaus lagen die Mormonenmetropole Salt Lake City, der Mount Rushmore, geschichtsträchtige Orte aus der Zeit des „Wilden Westens“, sowie viele weitere höchst interessante Stationen auf unserer Route.
