Research

Research Focus

The research focus is on regional development and concentrates on two main fields: Firstly, the European dimension of regional development is at the heart of the analyses. On the policy fields of regional development, transport and the environment the European influence is most visible. Also in cross-border integration, European factors play a strong role. Closely linked to this are the debates on territorial cohesion and on European spatial planning perspectives. Within the analysis of Europeanization, concepts of regional development are embedded into the perspectives of political geography, political sciences and social geography. Secondly, the focus lies on applied questions of regional development, in particular on metropolisation, economic development and demographic change. These questions are in particular addressed in the regional context of the University. Due to this research interest, the regional focus concentrates on the European Union, Franconia/Bavaria and on border regions (in particular the so called ‘Greater Region’ around Luxembourg).
